The History of Comme Des Garçons Why the name Comme Des Garçons?

The brand name is inspired by the song Tous les garçons et les filles sung by Françoise Hardy and released in 1962. A name that, from the outset, established Kawakubo's unconventional approach to the place of gender in fashion.

Who founded Comme Des Garçons?
Rei Kawakubo is the founder and avant-garde designer of Comme Des Garçons, and one of the most powerful women in contemporary fashion history. Born in Tokyo in 1942, Rei Kawakubo studied Fine Arts and Literature at Keio University. She then began her career in advertising, working for a textile company, before becoming a freelance stylist.
When did the brand become so popular?
From the moment it was launched, Comme Des Garçons was able to appeal to the celebrities of the day, but it wasn't until the late 1970s that the brand really made a name for itself among the general public. Since then, Comme Des Garçons has continued to be at the forefront of the industry, attracting fans from all walks of life, thanks in large part to the multitude of brands that make up its lineup.
